Rail passenger transport has played an important role in urban, suburban and medium- and long-haul routes, taking the form of a structuring and high-capacity mode. The main challenge in this sector is to promote its integration throughout the travel chain, creating conditions for it to effectively fulfill its role.

 

Rail freight transport in Portugal has been growing, although its share is small relative to other modes of transport. However, the need to transfer to environmentally and energy-efficient modes will lead to a progressive increase in its share, raising very important issues of integration, regulation and management whose resolution is fundamental to ensure a flow of processes that allows the maintenance of high levels of economic efficiency and service.
